Beyonce Says by Joanna C. Valente

Beyonce says there are more beautiful
Things than your body

Beyonce says put a ring on it
So you’ll be less lonely

Beyonce says it’s better to be
A fat woman than a skinny woman;

You will destroy
Everyone who is empty

Beyonce says we are forgetting
Our humanity into oblivion

Like bleeding rocks into
Niagara Falls, as if when we wake

Up, everything will be

& oblivion’s mystery will fall
like a bra strap

into the Atlantic in a winter
storm: we can’t get too close

loving it from afar, never
completely embracing something

that vast—that strange sense
of danger, that rush.

Beyonce says don’t make that
face because it will stay

that way forever; don’t plan
on living forever

because everything looks
better in reflection;

dreams & the dead are
alive in the same world

caught in a whale inside
a gigantic subway sequined

in poetry, afraid to die so
freeze eggs from ovary rot:

it will all end before
we know it.
